Pamela Smart - do you think it's time for her to be freed???

Isn't that an interesting question??  Its an especially interesting question if you are from Generation X as I am.    Why?  Well, because if you are from Generation X , Pamela Smart is a contemporary - someone that you are going to be able to relate to much more because you are from the same age group.   And there's much more.   I don't know if most people remember but neither the OJ case nor the Menendez Brothers case was the first nationally televised trial that turned into a media circus - the very first and original circus was the Pamela Smart case.   It was a big time story in that place in time, the early 1990s.  It was the first introduction to Court TV.   And certainly, it was fascinating.   Pamela, a married Media Coordinator at Winnacunnet High School in New Hampshire faces off against a bunch of teenagers that killed her husband and blamed her for it.  Who was right?   Who was wrong?

If we go back to that place in time,  I was 100% anti-Pamela Smart.  I thought she came off cold as ice, cocky, unfeeling,  basically just a real jerk.   I felt from first seeing her on screen that she had in fact masterminded the murder of her husband.  That was my instant impression of her.   She acted innocent but then of course the bombshell came,  which were tapes secretly recorded by someone that Pamela thought was a friend of hers - Cecilia Pierce.  These tapes, no matter how you look at them or how you arrange them or how you edit them, make it absolutely unquestionable that Pamela Smart did in fact mastermind the killing of her husband by manipulating a young boy - William Flynn - whom she was having an affair with, into doing the deed.  There is absolutely no question that she did this.   I've seen her in interviews and she acts like she was only playing a game with Cecilia to try to get information out of her.   Sorry Pam, but any sober thinking individual can see right through that BS excuse.  You were wrong, you manipulated that boy.  There is no doubt about it.

Which takes us back to the original question, should she be freed?   For doing what she did - Pamela has been incarcerated for coming up on 29 years.   Her sentence is life without parole.  To me that is pure insanity.   Add to that the fact that the boy who actually pulled the trigger - William Flynn - is now a free man.   Even if he was manipulated by her which we know to be true - he didn't know any better?  I don't think there are too many men on this planet that haven't at some point in their life had a difficult time with a woman.   However, most of us don't go and kill someone because of it.    I have seen Pamela Smart in recent interviews.   She still lies a bit but is not in any way a harmful person or threat to society.  She has been a model prisoner.   She is now like a lot of other Generation X'ers who can look back at their early 20s and say - boy - that sure was a stupid thing I did.  Unfortunately for her, the stupid thing she did ended up putting her in jail for life.   I find the current version of her gracious, kind and remorseful.   A million miles from that 23 year old jerk that I couldn't have cared less about back in 1991.    So, my answer to the question is yes, Pamela Smart should be freed.  This is a topic that inevitably stirs up controversy so I welcome and would enjoy the opinions of others.
